The Institute: TECH in ED Workshops will give teachers skills and instructional methodologies that will empower them to advance their teaching with technology. TECH in ED will utilize unique hands-on Interactive Technology Activities (ITAs) that will use camera images, Internet images and graphics to facilitate conceptualization of Math, Creative Writing, Social Studies and Science. ITA's will extend and integrate the concepts and will help to develop critical thinking skills. Teachers will use the appropriate concepts/content at various points in their courses and the new methods of technology will innovate the way concepts are being taught. In each session groups of teachers will create lessons by using the skills learned in the workshop, and the lessons will be burned on CD-ROM and posted on the Internet. Also, participants are encouraged to share their favorite demonstrations and activities. A resource book will be provided to each participant.
Session J: Integrating Microsoft Officeâ and the Internet in Class Activities will utilize MS Windowsâ 95/98, Word 1997/2000, Excel, FrontPage Express, Publisher, Paint, PowerPoint, Encarta, e-mail techniques, graphing calculators and Vernier data collection to create exciting math, language arts, science and social studies classroom activities. Classroom management strategies, alternative assessment procedures, effective Web lessons and electronic portfolios will be explored.
Session K: Integrating Multimedia in All Curricula will explore videoconferencing and TappedIn (http://www.tappedin.org) for communication and dialogue activities, e-mail, multimedia Internet activities, multimedia authoring using software (FrontPage Express, PowerPoint, Publisher, Paint and HyperStudio) and using hardware (scanners, videocapture, digital cameras, camcorders, draw pad, and Vernier Sensor data collection with computers and graphing calculators for math/science teachers). Electronic portfolios of student learning, integration of multimedia technology with projects, classroom management strategies and alternative assessment procedures will be studied.
Session L: Integrating the Internet and Web Page Authoring with All Curricula will explore the effective use of the Internet and Web page authoring in the various disciplines. Effective critical thinking Web research techniques with search engines and Web site evaluation will be studied. Web page authoring will focus on writing WebQuests class lessons using FrontPage Express. Also, participant will learn how to make and maintain their own class or school web page. The use of the basics of various communications, e-mail, videoconferencing and dialogue communication of TappedIn, will be integrated into the curriculum. Activities with graphing calculators and sensors will be explored for data collection and integrated with Internet activities.
Session M: Integrating Real Life and Field Experiences with All Curricula will utilize both virtual and real activities from outside the classroom. Digital cameras, videocapture techniques, laptop computers and various multimedia authoring programs will be used to create learning activities from resources outside of the classroom. Fieldtrips to the zoo/nature center will provide a theme to the learning modules created by participants and will utilize real life experiences while integrating ecology, math, language arts, social studies and geography. Vernier sensors and graphing calculators will be used for data collection and analysis, and the Toshiba Laptop Learning Challenge Lessons will also be utilized.
