Taliban
St. Stephen Middle School
November, 2001
Hello, I am from St. Stephen Catholic School and I am making this page for you to know more about the Taliban and what they do. The Taliban used to rule most of Afghanistan until now. Most of the Taliban have fled from Afghanistan since the September 11 tragic attack on New York. Right now the Northern Alliance is in control of Afghanistan and people are rejoicing. People who once grieved the raw treatment by the Taliban against them are now very happy. The men are shaving their beards and the women are taking off their hoods.
The Taliban have very strict rules which deprives people of their freedom and give them limited power unlike the freedom in the United States. The Taliban makes women cover their bodies and do not let them go to school to be educated. They also have severe punishments against crimes. One example is if a person steals in Afghanistan they get their hands cut off.
Here are some pictures of the punishments that are inflicted towards the Afghanistan people by the Taliban.
All the information below is what I got from Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA)

A Pakistani football (soccer) team that went to play some matches in the Afghan city of Kandahar has returned home after being arrested for wearing shorts. The players who wore shorts were forced to have their heads shaved due to the customs of the Taliban.

In the picture above the Taliban are beating a women in public because she dared to remove her burqa (hood) in public.
The Taliban And The United States
The Taliban and the United States have been against each other for a long time. The main reason we were mad at them was because of their refusal to hand in Bin Laden when they had the chance to. We said that we would give them a couple of days to hand in Bin Laden or we would start bombing them. At first they agreed but then at the last minute they refused to hand in Bin Laden. They said we did not have enough proof to convict Bin Laden guilty and they would not hand him in. We then retalliated on October 7, this is when the war started. Our goal was to bomb all the Taliban traning camps and all of the Taliban bases. Only a couple of civilians died from the attacks on Afghanistan. Our goal in the war is to destroy the Taliban not the civilians of Afghanistan. After a couple of days later from the bombings we started to drop little yellow bags of food on Afghanistan. At first the Afghan people did not trust what was in the bags but then they started to open them and to their surprise it was food. Most of the people in Afghanistan were scared but now are rejocing in the streets shaving off their beards and the women are taking off their hoods. This was all happening when American soldiars passed through the streets of Afghanistan. Some people are so happy that they are free from the Taliban control that they are now breaking away from their old customs.
