Abstract
TIPS
-- Technology and Inquiry: Practical Suggestions
This workshop will help you develop teaching techniques that integrate Vernier sensor technology, video microscopy, digital photography, readily available computer software and various alternatives to lecturing.  Tie it all together in an atmosphere of inquiry from the perspective of levels of organization. Explore photosynthesis from the stomata with video capture to the ecosystem with carbon dioxide sensors; examine the rhythms of heart rates in developing fish with video capture and adult humans with EKG sensors, ask about measuring the rate of osmosis in a model cell with conductivity sensors and in Paramecium using video capture of contractile vacuoles. Use Microsoft Office 2000® to compile multimedia lab reports with images and data.  All of this presented in non-lecture formats.   You will go home with ideas you can use in your classes the next day and a vision for teaching and learning in the new millennium.  Participants will receive a resource manual, and A Guide to Asking About Life for Teachers and TAs by Donald Cronkite.  Participants have a chance to win selected Microsoft software.  For the latest developments concerning this workshop see Classtech2000 at http://www.classtech2000.com and NABT at http://www.nabt.org.

Sponsorship includes Vernier Software, Texas Instruments, Carolina Biological Supply,Microsoft Corporation, Win Cube Technologies Corporation.  The Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Louisiana Quality Education Support Fund, Hope College, Harcourt College Publishers, Prentice Hall School Division, The Biology Place and Videodiscovery.
