Making Checklists
In this exercise you will:
Practice formatting
Insert rows and columns
Dragging to change column width
Set the print area

Open the Excel Practice Workbook.  Normally you wouldn't open a file from the Internet without scanning it for viruses but we know the source. Save the worksheet as a Excel Microsoft Workbook.  You can go back and forth between this window and the Excel workbook.

  1. First thing to do is to change row 1's text to vertical alignment.  HOW
  2. We need to insert a column in front of column A.  Highlight column A.  <Insert> <Columns>
  3. Moving contents.  We need names.  These are in column G.  Drag and highlight the names.  <Edit> <Cut>.
  4. Move to cell A2.  Hit <enter>.  The list should have moved.
  5. Highlight the entire sheet.  HOW
  6. Format the columns and rows using AutoFit. HOW
  7. Format the text to 14
  8. Add a customized header and footer.  Header:  Class Name     Footer:  Teacher Name and date  HOW
  9. Column A looks too tight.  To change the width without using the format menu, move the cursor between columns A and B.  It should change shapes.  Left click and drag until you have the column width you want.  This can be done with rows by moving the cursor between the row numbers.

  10. Click on the <Print Preview Button (magnifying glass)>.  Go to set up and add gridlines.
  11. Setting Print Area.  I need to print more than just the columns and rows that are in the preview.  Go to <View> <Page Break Preview>  Drag the columns to between L and M.  Drag the rows down to 14.  Notice that column L is on the second page.  Drag the preview back between K and L.  You have just set the area that will be printed.

A word on saving.  Save, Save, Save.  Save frequently.  Save when you are thinking.  Save before a major reformat.  Save when someone starts talking to you.  It is just a good thing to do.

On to practice more and add a couple more items.  Bookkeeping Tasks
