CLASS SPONSOR BOOKKEEPING

Open the Excel Practice Workbook.  Normally you wouldn't open a file from the Internet without scanning it for viruses but we know the source. You can go back and forth between this window and the Excel workbook.  Save the worksheet as a Excel Microsoft Workbook.

In this exercise you will:
Practice your formatting skills
Define formulas
Auto fill a cell
Hide columns

  1. Click on the Class Sponspor Worksheet.  Horizontally align the first row.  HOW
  2. Sort the Names in column A alphabetically.  Yes, you want to expand the selection in order to keep each individuals data with them.  Don't forget you have a header row.  HOW
  3. Change the font to 12 pt.
  4. Autofit the columns and rows.  HOW
  5. Set the view area from A1 to H9.  HOW
  6. Setting formulas.  Go to G2.  Type =sum(
  7. Highlight cells C2 to F2.  <Enter>.  The hours in those blocks are now summed.  You included through F in case you later add columns between E and G or add something into F.  Notice the formula bar area.  It has the equation.  The cell has the number.  All formulas must begin in =

  8. Change the 1 to a 4.  The sum is automatically updated.  Delete 1.5.  Notice the update.
  9. Autofill.  Filling the formula in for the others is easy.  Highlight G2 to G9.  <Edit> <Fill> <Down>.  The formula but not the numbers is automatically copied and pasted.
  10. Notice G4 might have some ## signs.  The column is too narrow.  Autofit the column.  HOW
  11. The students have brought in items to replace hours.  You decide that for every $7.50 donated a hour will be credited. Define another formula for cell H2.  This formula tells the computer to divide B2 by $7.50 and then add it to G2.  The order is not important.  The parenthesis are.

  12. Fill in the formula for the rest of the students.
  13. Click on the <Print Preview Button (magnifying glass)>. Set the Gridlines.  HOW
  14. Set a Header and Footer.   Header:   Sophomore Class   Footer:  Fill in with Date  HOW
  15. Hiding.  You decide you only want to print the totals.  Highlight Columns B to F.  <Format> <Columns> <Hide>
  16. To unhide.  Highlight the columns on both sides of the hidden columns.  <Format> <Columns> <Unhide>.
  17. Set the print area A1 to L29.  HOW
The last challenge.  Setting up a gradebook.
